in LA, my local group AMBI, along with a coalition of other bisexual social and support groups, and i marched in the LA Pride Parade. we are the first bisexual contingent of the parade and this was the second year we were included. since my coming out, it was the first time i had participated in a pride parade and i captured the whole event on camera. i'm planning on cutting it together into a short documentary, possibly a pod for Current TV, exploring the new inclusion of bisexuals in the LGBT community.
it was a pretty positive response. people on the sidelines cheered and applauded. i got hit on by plenty of guys, most of whom looked like friends of my dad. we had the flags and banners in the bi colors and all wore purple shirts with our slogan, one love.
of course, we get some sneers and rolling eyes from gay and straight people in the crowd. someone even shouted 'make up your mind', to which my friend yelled back, 'i have, i'm BI'. that kind of thing is bound to happen a few times, though.
we are a small group, with such a limited budget. we didn't have a float or anything impressive like that. we managed to get more than 30 marchers, which, i'm told is twice what they had last year. it's kind of an underdog feeling, but the whole point is to change that.
