A lot of large chain stores are known for putting returned merchandise back out in the "new" product shelves without letting customers know that the items were returned--its OK if they do it and let you know so that it is "buyer aware." SAM's has a section of returned items and sometimes you can find OK things there.
Best Buy had the Attorneys General of something like 20 states filing cases against them for putting returned items back on the shelves as "new" items.
You really do have to watch what the retailers do---it does seem that all too often these days---the notion of customer service is out the window and the only value is profit at all costs--everyone and everything else be damned!
