Just curious if any of you all have seen the new movie out called Mama Mia? We saw it on Saturday night. Now I never have had a chance to see the Broadway show of this movie so I have little to compare it to. I must fess up and admit that I am a closeted ABBA fan. The movie and play are based on a compilation of the music group from Sweeden based around a story of a wedding. I did not even know who was staring in it.
Well...my thoughts...while it was not the best musical movie I have seen( think Sound of Music, Funny Girl, My Fair Lady)....I laughed hysterically. Pierce Brosnan may not be a singer by trade...but it was fun to see him try and man is he GOOD on the eyes. Meryl Steep was not whom I would have picked to play the lead, but it was her two side kicks....Christine Baranski and Julie Walter who in my opinion steal the show..oh my word I nearly died with laughter at them. I kept thinking I could be Christine's character.
While the critics may have panned the movie...the audience clapped at the end. Your thoughts.

Christine Baranski is excellent in anything that she does....I have loved her ever since the old Cybil series...when her drunken character was always stalking her ex husband...the infamous Dr. Dick as she called him! LOL She stole the show from Cybil Shepherd!!...not that it's that hard to do LOL!!
And as for this movie...it will be one that I will most likely have to view alone...no one in my male oriented household will go with me LOL!!

Movie may have been panned because folks arent into musicals anymore really...
My exhusband used to get mad at me for watching my fave musicals from rodgers and hammerstein and everything shown on TCM... (people dont just sporadically bust out in song in real life --he said)
I may wait til it comes out online to watch it tho... seems like it would be interesting to watch my dOOd Remington Steele bust one out :)

The play is coming to Portland soon and I have season tickets. I figure if I really like it, I will rent it when it comes out on DVD.

Now, I loved Titanic because I was facinated with it as a child. I could have easily done without the love story part.
But as far as musicals...
I saw shear genius in Rocky Horror Picture Show and Moulin Rouge. Rocky got respect it deserved (mostly because of cult following), but Moulin Rouge... it kicked ass (fav over-the-top scene was the Abscynth psychotic scene). And the near seamless merging of Elton John music and all into medleys... fantastic.
I just don't understand that movie not getting huge fanfare...

Actually, if you have to see a musical, then I suggest "Wicked".
I am no fan of musicals, but the wife and her sister are; and since the brother in law is an actor/dancer in NY, he got us tickets to "Wicked" and I was impressed.
Haven't seen "Titanic; the musical", nor have we seen "Mama Mia", but we like the music of ABBA, so I guess we'll see if we get a chance to see the movie.

As a bit of a theatre nerd...I can't wait to go see Mama Mia. Wicked is decent. My Broadway favorite is The Lion King...for the simple fact that the costumes are absolutely breathtaking. Broadway musicals tend to be too...campy...for me. I like things that make you think a little bit more. So my honest opinion is if you're going to watch a musical, watch one Off Broadway. Or even off-off-Broadway. You'll pay less for the ticket and probably get a better show. :2cents:
