After doing a Google search for bi-friendly healthcare, I have yet to find an ob-gyn or general practioner that is GLBT friendly. Any suggestions as to how I might locate someone in the central Florida area? I want to be able to be open about all matters of my life with my healthcare providers, and I am learning that the Bible belt runs right through central and western Florida.

All advice is welcome!!

Thanks!

Hello,

I guess that I am a rather lucky lady because I have both a general practioner and a gynocologist, and a specialist who know all about the lifestyle that my bisexual husband and I have. The gynocologist is the most protective and fearful of my health as I have tested positive for HPV, which is rampant. I have a feeling that it was within my system long before our foray into the bisexual life. The ones whom I have received the most support from have been the nurses in all three doctors office. THEY are the most understanding. My primary care doctor, a woman (as is the gyno) has five or six transexuals amoung her patients, and was very helpful to me when I discovered a dear friend wanted to travel down that road.

I hope that you find a doctor as wonderful as mine.

Unfortunately, this is a significant issue for many folks, especially bisexuals. There is an ongoing project in Boston, looking at training of PCPs and family doctors around bisexuality, and encouraging people to be able to advocate for themselves, in their healthcare and bisexuality.

That said, I would recommend you:
1. Contact the local chapter of PFLAG to request referrals
2. Likewise, contact local gay-rights organizations to seek referral
3. Check out kink aware professionals - it is more oriented towards therapy, but does include some medical healthcare types...

4. You may have to just test the waters and come out - while they exist, I'd be surprised if you ran into an ob-gyn that really made your bisexuality an uncomfortable issue - they see lots of more complicated stuff, all day long. If you do run into that doc - simply go to another one...

good luck

Check out your local gay pride web site. There may be info there, if not you can always email them or if available post your question in a forum or chat area. Pride sites are usually a wealth of information and support. Good Luck

Also look in your local gay newspaper for doctor ads.
