Hi all,

I've always wanted to start a thread for this site, just for the purposes of asking people in other countries questions that you've never had the chance or courage to ask.

For instance, I've always wanted to ask a Canadian, why is the Queen of England on all your money? Does it bug you to have her on all your coins and bills? Why call the highway to Toronto "Queen Elizabeth Way"? Why not settle for just a high school or maybe a small fountain named after Queen Elizabeth, instead of putting the woman's name on everything important?

Anyone who wants to ask me (an American) anything, can feel free to, though I figure people seem to know everything about us Yankees already.

Love,
J

>>>[W]hy is the Queen of England on all your money?

Because she is legally the Queen of Canada, too. We "share" the same monarch.

>>>Does it bug you to have her on all your coins and bills?

Most Canadians don't think of it. Does it bug you to see Benjamin Franklin on a $100 or FDR on a dime? Same thing here :)

>>>Why call the highway to Toronto "Queen Elizabeth Way"?

This was named after Elizabeth II's mother, who was also Queen Elizabeth.

>>>Why not settle for just a high school or maybe a small fountain named after Queen Elizabeth, instead of putting the woman's name on everything important?

Why is there JFK and Ronald Reagan Airports, and and entire state named Washington? Same thing, and we do have other things named after the current monarch... The road from Calgary to Edmonton is also named the Queen Elizabeth Way, and that *is* named after Elizabeth II of Canada.

My one question: I'm very certain that many, many Americans are very bright, but why do I always run into the ones who ask me -- quite seriously, and in person -- where my summer igloo is, or even better -- show up in southern Ontario in July, wearing parkas, snowpants and having skis on top of their SUV, and asking me where the nearest snow is?

The skiers happened to me twice, and the igloo thing just drives me bonkers.

The queen doesnt hold any power anymore, but taking her off the constitution is costy and troublesome. So legally, we have to tolerate her and pay the high price for "her majesty" every time she comes here to wave her hand. Theres a lot of issues with that old constitution, gotta be updated quite a lot.

I've always wanted to ask a Canadian, why is the Queen of England on all your money?

Um, because we never rebelled against the Crown. If not for Tom Paine and co., the Queen might be on your money, too. And of course there are American placenames that recall British monarchs, such as Charleston (Charles's Town).

It should be noted that the French Canadians, or many of them, would be only too happy to have the Queen and her likeness thrown overboard. The same may be true of some of the new Canadians who come from former British colonies, I don't know. But the old English Canadian stock was always besotted with old Blighty -- that's why we fought in the Boer War and the two World Wars, all of which we might comfortably and sensibly have avoided. (It's somewhat ironic, btw, that some Canadians term Americans warlike, since we entered WWI in 1914 (as against your 1917) and WW2 in 1939 (as against your December 1941).
