I have to admit--I would never have thought it possible--but on Monday I met some cool people and went out with them to take a sail on the Ohio River near Cincinnati---it was a great day. They do this all the time--a pretty fun thing to do!!!

This is looking upriver towards Cincinnati--we are about four or five miles from downtown at this point....

Sailing is SO much fun! When I lived in Wyoming we got to take the bosses boat out on the lake on Saturday. It was SUCH a fun day!
Personally if we were staying here in Florida I'd like to get a boat but they're So expensive and everything comes in $100 incriments. Oil filter $100, fill up the gas tank $100, etc.
If you can get past that, they really are loads of fun!

I LOVE sailing.
I used to have a small 20 ft boat and went sailing on the Pacific Ocean off Malibu, CA but couldn't afford it anymore (expensive even if dry dock).
Recently, when sailing with onewhocares...
I bet if we ask her about her experience, she would LOVE to share...
Right, Belle???
LOL

Last time i went sailing, the mast broke off. It was great, we were stranded in the middle of the bay. Needless to say, my friend (who owns the boat) and her dad (who was steering at the time) were not nearly as impressed as the rest of us were.

How in tarnation did you guys break the mast??? Did a bad storm hit you? or did ya get too close to some trees or something????
I once crewed on an ocean going sailboat and we were racing offshore between Savannah and Hilton Head Island when a nasty squall line hit us and we almost got dismasted---
That was an expensive day for those folks!!!!

Herbwoman--there are few old sayings about boats that are pretty much true:
"A boat is a hole in the water in which one throws money!" and "the best two days of owning a boat are the day you buy it and the day you sell it!!"
The first one--it is pretty much true--and the other one--well I don't believe that for here is another saying and I do like this one: "A bad day on the water beats a great day in the office!!!"

We had been going a a decent speed and were trying to take sharp corners to see how close to the water we could get, fooling around, you know. I should add that there were 7-8 of us on a relatively small boat. We got tipped over enough that some of our lines were dragging in the water, which pulled us over further, got part of the sail under, and the drag bent the aluminum mast. What a rush! We were just lucky we didn't tip over :crosseye:

On the pond the house is located--nicely tucked away from the more exposed areas of the lake that gets rough thanks to storms and boat traffic:

Sorry to be posting up so much stuff--but I love the water and I am ever so glad that the warm weather is coming back again----it might be kind of fun if everyone does post up threads with stuff like this of what we all do in our lives---we have folks who ride cool motorcycles and stuff like that-----I encourage everyone to post up some threads with pics of some of the things they do----I think it might be fun and interesting to see what everyone does----

I don't know Richard--is it kinda like "if the boats a rockin' don't come a knockin' ?"
I've been on the water since I was two years old---I don't care if I am on it whether its a river, a lake or the ocean or I'm in a dingy, a rowboat or a cruise liner--I've got to be on or near the water or I go bonkers----

The story on that house is interesting--the family that owns it has more money than God--he comes to them for a loan--they own a whole slew of busineses that include gravel pits, an asphalt company and a big time concrete company --they are the single biggest landowner in that county---they first built the house ten or so years ago and the original part is back to your left as you look at the picture --you can't really see that part of the house too well but the front part you see is an addition they built about five or six years ago now---the original house came in at around a half mil but the new section has no bedrooms in it---just a big area for partying with a huge stone fireplace and another kitchen that serves this part of the house plus a huge entryway and another four or five car garage in addition to the original three car garage--the cost of the addition so the word is: $1.25 million!!!

naw, it's an old english sea chanty, from the plague days;
"..we were the good ship venus
my gawd, ye shoulda seen us
the figurehead was a nude in bed,
and the mast was a rampant penis!!...
The first mate was Omalley,
'e di na dilly dally
'e shot his bolt with such a jolt
it whitewashed half the galley
<chorus>
frigging on the rigging,
masturbating on the grating,
there was fuck all else to do....
the cabin boy was chipper
'e was a lil nipper
'e stuffed 'is ass full of glass
and circumcised the skipper!!"
it goes on for about 10 verses i think, but it's a pretty bawdy reflection on what life on a sailing ship was like when you were totally becalmed or had to stay off shore at anchor with a black plague flag over your head..lot of old sailors i've met knew bits and pieces of the verses was hoping you might be able to fill some in too....
