Strawberry,
Make the most of it. Party, meet people, have fun, experiment without making moral judgements, be kind, openminded and explore who you are and what you want. I am 40 and wasted my college years with my nose in books. I thought that was ALL college was about. I missed out on a lot. Studying has its place but this is a time where you get the freedom of an adult without much of the responsibility. If done right it should be the best times of your life. CARPE DIEM.

Some words of wisdom from a current college senior:
-Sleep is for the weak.
-Caffeine is life.
-Don't stress over making sure you have people you know going to the dining hall the same time as you are, so that you'll have someone to sit with. Sit with anyone, strangers especially. Introduce yourself.
-Go up to other random people and start a conversation. You might not know anyone yet, but neither does anyone else.
-Especially among freshman/first years: No matter what time is it: somewhere, someone is awake, bored, and looking for someone to hang out with them. Try to find them.

good advice SciFiBiJen.
I'd also like to add that while friends are a good thing, you shouldn't rely on them ALL the time in order to go to events (concerts, parties, bars, etc.) or even going out to dinner.
Cliques are still around in college, and while it sucks don't become dependant on one.
I'd like to add the part in about talking to random people. I met some of my best friends that way who I still keep in contact with.
Clubs/activities may sound corny but a lot of them are just excuses for social groups.
Learn to managage your time, so you can party/study/work/write papers and do research, and still get good grades.
Caffeine is your best friend. Don't make it a habit of cutting classes; but every so often it's nice to cut.

WOOHOO! Go Terps!!!
Uhm, yeah I went to the University of Maryland online (UMUC), myself. As if that wasn't obvious.
Big BIG rule: Don't procrastinate. Seriously. Get whatever it is done and over with so you're not sweating it at the last minute.
Congratulations hon. You're gonna love college. it's the best five years of anyone's life :tong:

Bill,
I must disagree with your advice about the value of education. I went overboard on focusing on the education aspect partly from getting the advice from my parents that you just gave to Strawberry. You know how it goes. Study and work hard and success inevitably follows. That is not neccessarily the case. I figure she will get plenty of that advice from parents. At one time I believed in the value of education. I have reached the conclusion it is not what you know but who you know that determines success or failure. Afterall look at who our president is. Most jobs are teachable to most anyone, college degree or not. I am unemployed, have an MBA and an accounting degree and am currently studying to pass CPA exam. I have been in school forever with very poor results. Yet I know people who knew the right people and got nice cushy jobs with no education or training for that job. Education is not the best path to success. The value of a college degree in today's world is tremendously over rated. The value of college is to develop social skills and meet the right people. It is not what you get out of the books. Can you recall much of what you learned from books in college?

Education is not the best path to success.
I understand what you're going for, but I think a better summary is "Education is not the ONLY path to success." Having a degree does still count for quite a bit, even if it means getting a job that you might possibly get by another means too. At worst, you get more time to explore possible career paths if you don't have one already picked out and you make contacts for future networking.

College, hmmmm...
As a senior I'll add in agreement that caffiene is your best friend. Manage your time, and remember to get some sleep.
Make friends! It can be a lifeline for you.
Oh and any money you get your hands on save...!
I'm telling you from experience, money doesnt come easy while in college.
Good Luck! :bipride:

It was probably inappropriate for me to criticize someone else's advice. I just hope Strawberry has better results than I have had. I recommend pre-law or pre-med. I would think lawyer, pharmacist or pharmaceutical sales would be good fields. It is good to pick something that would be difficult to be outsourced.

Good luck to you, Strawberry! I'm 52 and still rank my college years as among the best in my life. You'll meet all kinds of interesting people -- some who may become lifelong friends -- and learn exciting things. Have a blast, but study hard, too. Any reasonably intelligent person can get through college with a minimal amount of effort, but don't do that; be disciplined, draw a line between your play time and academics, and study hard! Don't worry if you're unsure about your career choices, you'll find something you like and when you do, get passionate about it!

Ill be studying Computer Science!
Cool. Fun degree. :)
A couple words of advice: In my experience, 90% of the top programmers are the ones who realise that there's a world outside of computers. Make sure you take electives in non-computer courses that interest you. If you're the sort that really doesn't want to take non-computer courses, there's also a practical benefit: other fields have problems whose solutions can very often be adapted to solve computer science problems. :)
Next piece of advice: Study a little bit each day. SO MUCH EASIER than studying all at once. But it's hard to do, and I know you've probably heard it from a thousand other people, so I'll be quiet. :) But related to this... Programming always takes longer than you think it will, so don't leave assignments to the last minute. You should be able to get away with it at first, but by the time you get into the fun stuff, you'll be screwed if you keep trying it.
Also, stay healthy. Eat properly (or as well as you can), but more importantly, get regular exercise and plenty of rest. If you tend to stay up late at night, see if you can arrange your schedule so you can nap at some point during the day. Being in good physical condition makes everything easier, trust me.
Finally: Have fun. :)
Oh, and if you need help with programming stuff, the odds are pretty good that I'll be able to give you pointers. :)

Good luck to you, angel. The money that you are spending for your education will take you much so much farther than inlarging your butt. My best to you, and take good care.
