A friend of mine in China actually sent me this link. I was beyond shocked to see the reason for the riot.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/10132391/Riot-after-Chinese-teachers-try-to-stop-pupils-cheating.html

The friend went on to say that many believe that China has some superiority right now over other nations but he finds living there for that to not be true.

So much pressure on the people to succeed on that test as it just sets you for life. Certain regions have easier tests so rich foreigners are able to pay to take the test anywhere. Maybe residents are falsifying papers to let them take it in an easier sector.

I don't know, but wouldn't be surprised if there is more to this than the Torygraph has printed... but there always has seen and always shall be attmpts to get through exams which are less than kosher.. and as kids and students come to the end of school life and college and uni courses, because of the increase in pressure this is likely to be more pronounced... every year we get scare stories bout cheating, but sometimes it is not only the kids who cheat to get the their grades, but the system and the people who run the system in their school or college as they "artificially" (I hestitate to say dishonestly but often that's exactly what it is) raise gradings to boost up the coursework element of exams and qualifications...

Undue and often unfair pressure placed upon schools, colleges and universities is often responsible and Education authorities and Heads/Principals?Rectors.Chancellors because of that pressure have been known to place pressure downwards to ensure that their institutions' place(s) in "league tables" are secured, and of course, often their job... and some teachers buckle and give false coursework gradings off their own bat which helps boost final gradings at the end of a course... they have their backs and livelihoods to cover too... this is a problem more found south of the border than north of it, but even we in Scotland are not immune to such pressures..

There is a demand for ever improving results from our educational institutions, but often such is the pressure placed from on high that something has to crack.. and we end up with some form of institutionalised cheating for institutional advantage...pressure often from Government itself, the media, business..sometimes even parents.....

Conversely there is suspicion that government manipulated last years GCSE and A level results in England and Wales by placing pressure on the Qualifications agencies to down mark certain subjects to prove a point that the system as it operates in England and Wales is broken... there weren't riots, but there was one helluva a hullaballoo and the activities and statements of the UK Education Secretary has poured oil on already burning waters as he strives to return English education back to the 19th and early 20th centuries in content and style...... I just thank God that dimwit (a Scot from Aberdeen who should know better) deals with an education system other than mine own... arguably.. what he does, and his government south of the border is a quite different kind of cheating, which has, it is claimed, artificially depressed the qualification gradings of a whole year of 16-18 year old kids within the system in England for which he is responsible.. done for nothing more than party political advantage. Sod the kids and their futures...

There are examples of plagiarism and other forms of cheating throughout any education system and always shall be some.. proper attribution can get students through many such accusations., but just as schools and other education establishments, Heads and teachers and education authorities have pressure placed on them, this is no less true for pupils and students... their entire future is tied up in education and some do look for the easy way to success especialy as they eter the final straght... and some get rumbled, although not all by any means... there are many different ways they can and do cheat, but cheating is not as endemic as some claim at any level for whatever reason. I am not being complacent here but I know my profession and know the vast majority of my colleagues to be conscientious, hard working and caring who want the best for their charges and work tirelessly, often very long hours defying external pressures to try and ensure that and know that even most kids like the satisfaction of achievement through their own honest endeavours..

What occurred in China is serpently an eye opener, and while we are led to believe it centres around cheating, just as with such claims in the systems which exist in this country and elsewhere, it is just as likely that there are other deep rooted problems within that system which those students are taking issue with... am just glad the hols r with us now cos last term they wer a rite tetchy lorra sods and got tetchier as the term went on... and much of that was down 2 the fact that in May, 4th-6th year kids had the pressure of sitting exams which affect their entire future... and now the stress is on them and us of waiting to find out how well they did, for how well they have done reflects on those who taught them for how well or badly can determine to some extent our own futures as much as it does the kids who took those exams ......

When under stress we r always likely 2 get uptight... and if something unexpected happens which places our entire future in jeopardy, then occasionally we too are likely to riot (or protest very noisily) or at least consider it..and if we r the ones being held responsible, and if we believe that we are being held to account unfairly then we are even more likely so to do... as I say I don't know the truth of what has happened in China.. but did find it interesting, so tyvm for the link.. more than interesting, since I have wandered off in 2 me own world of paranoia and neurosis and replied to ur post in me own long- winded way to make what I see are general and fundamental problems within education as a whole, primarily, but not exclusively, in the UK... there are far more of course... and I have only touched on the one u raise Darlin' darlin'... that of cheating...

..just don't raise the issue of abolishing long summer hols... that will really wind me up and will take several pages 2 do a rant on those:eek2:... bet down south they must love Gove for his announcement yesterday.. tf as I say he has no say wot goes on up here:cutelaugh...

Recently saw a glimpse into some of those other "deep rooted problems"
in a documentary (http://tinyurl.com/lgc9h5x). These adversities bear similarity with the current
education system here in America. The schools do not bother teaching
in earnest, merely providing a rough base pool for human resource firms,
headhunters.

Competition for any meaningful occupation is extremely high. One
student lost a job in about two or three weeks. He could not work with
Excel spreadsheets effectively well to suit the supervisor. This was
due to the schools having an attitude shirking teaching poor "farm
kids who have never even seen a computer" how to use them. The thought
is literally, "why bother"?

Such an attitude prevails when there are too many people, not enough
jobs. Here in America, we outsource manufacturing. We are not making a
great effort to guide a new generation into green or technology based
occupations. Yes, there is some effort, it is not being
enthusiastically vaulted though.

Obviously, with automation there is not a great need of many
employees. Those positions are then guarded, funneled to elitist type
of folks. Of course, this is jmho, am sure ymmv.

Just wanted to add, my comprehension of the Chinese father calling for
fairness does beyond the tests. It goes to there being fairness in that
the "game" (not that I exactly consider living a game) is not rigged by
an oppulent "elite" house. So that folks can in fact provide for families,
against an economy which continually raises costs and devaules
currencies as part of the "rigging" by that same "house".

My youngest daughter got her Phycology degree there at Cambridge, and was always telling me that one of her instructors was Constantly berating her and belittling her because she was an American, and didnt really deserve the right to go to that University. She always gave Mooch a hard time, was constantly on her ass for one thing or another, or singling her out in class, and seemed to grade her more sternly than other students. But Mooch was determined to prove her wrong and was the top 5 in the class when she graduated.
I personally would have eaten the old Cow's face off, and reported her, but Mooch isnt as mean as her old Mama Is...lol.
My girl graduated with full Honors, and still works as an Admin Assistant at the Consulate there..:}
