Heya! Anyone here taking much interest in the world cup football? If you are then who are you backing? Seeing as though South Africa didn't make it in to the cup I'm backing my fellow African countries. Wouldn't mind seeing the Dutch do well this time too. Any thoughts?

I'm rooting for Argentina but only because of a friend there. Otherwise I haven't really followed it.

Been following it avidly daily. Not so much cos I'm a big football fan, but I'm in a fantasy football league, where the aim is to pick the players who are going to play well, defend well, etc. etc. I'm currently lying 2nd in the league - more by good luck than good judgement I have to say, but it's been fun all the same.

Can't believe how badly some of the big nations are playing - like my home team England, and also France, even Brasil. Argentina are awesome, so they are getting my vote to win.

Good for Ghana, beating the Czech Republic yesterday. Australia were unlucky today - the referee really wanted Brazil to win and seemed to help them all the way.

Would still like to see England start playing better and get further in the competition - but they won't if they don't improve and fast !

Pete.

P.S. - I don't have a TV so I rely on the commentary on the radio - bbc.co.uk/5live if you're interested.

When the English Premiership is under way a few of my friends and I are involved in the Yahoo! fantasy football and it keeps me very entertained.

I'd also go with Argentina to take it this year, but if I had my way we'd see Ghana as the world champions!

I'm rooting for Ghana!

I rarely pay attention to soccer except during the World Cup, but I have to back my ancestry (my dad was born in Ghana... he's loving the games this year). And it's USA vs. Ghana tomorrow morning. I won't get to see the game because I'll be on a bus but it should be amazing!

Shows my vast knowledge of World Cup games... I got the date wrong for the USA vs. Ghana game Lol.

There's only a slightly better chance that I'll be able to see it Thursday though. I'm on internship at the top of a nowheresville mountain... if I can get a ride into civilization though, I'll be sure to watch.

Yay Ghana!

Does anyone know, are there any openly GLBT people playing or coaching in the World Cup? It's probably too much to hope for but I am just wondering if maybe there is someone who has taken the brave step and is a role model for the young atheletes out there who might be GLBT.

Just want to clarify a point: This is not football to us americans. This is soccer. This is a glorified club activity very similar to square dancing. Football in america, aka, the NFL, is a violent, fast paced, high scoring wonderful game.

But at the same time we cannot be ignorant to the fact that the rest of the world does not refer to soccer as soccer. The world does not run with an "according to the United States" standard. I like Italy in the World Cup, although I would like to see the US push the envelope.

Go the Aussies in the World Cup.....................and if you want a fast violent game tightabs try Rugby Leauge where the players aren't padded up to the hilt and they play on with their injuries and all............now thats football.

As to who??? Argentina are hot, but tonite Spain plays game 2. They looked awesome first round.

Normally we are Aussi rules fanatics, but for a month we know everything about soccer. Its fun.

Oh come on, football (as the rest of the world knows it) is the most popular game in the world. Football requires some of the greatest skill in any sport. NFL is played in how many countries? :tong: Whereas football is played in hundreds of countries world wide!

Yup any game that's played with that much padding can't really be that violent eh? But I'm going to disagree on the Rugby League, try Rugby Union!!

Why try and turn this thread into a pissing contest???

It doesn't matter what game it is - no game is better or demands more courage than any other.
As long as its enjoyable, as long as the fans can have a good day out and most importantly as long as kids get out and play it and get off the x-boxes.

Saw this an cudnt resist a blast! Watchin' it wiv me usual fascination for the beautiful game. No Paulie Hartley but then we cant have everythin'. Are some yummie guys there tho! Not Mr Potato head tho. Gr8 player..brain like mashed tatties an face like a peeled one with sum placcie bits stuck on. Who me wanna win? Well ne 1 but England, Becks an Mr Potato Head please! If there is a God which me doubts spare us that! Wud never hear the end of it. Auntie Beeb wud ram it down our throats till the end of time! Me dad has had 2 suffer them winnin in 1966 ever since every chance they get ta show it, an me is too young ta put up with anotha one till the end of me days. Only regret is we aint there ta make our usual pigs ear of it. An' Paulie Hartley has the looks an legs an arse to make it worth puttin up wiv our usual fiasco! We may b crap but allus gives the world a laff wen we duz make it ta the finals.

An who me wanna win? Me hope Brazil, but reckon the Argies from wot me seen so far. An' Spain mayb. Look pretty useful. But me not really care..jus so long as its not me mums lot! Anotha Fran blast bout fitba'! First how can a game wer no one eva kicks a ball b called football? Well they do...to kick off! Mayb a drop goal, mayb a field goal..think thats wot ya calls em in merican football. If it tickles ya fancy good..enjoy. Second soccer, a name the British nobs devised in the 19th century is an abbreviation of Association Football, ta identify it apart from Rugger, the nobs word for Rugby (father of american football but at least they kick the ball a bit more often).

The grand ole game of Rugby League, as opposed to union has been raised. An me been brought up on League since cud hardly reach me dads knee. Me mum hailin from the North West of England (sadly..hehehe) which exposed me 2 a sport which is hard furious an easily the most exciting game of its type. Far more excitin than union, or Oz Rules, certainly american football. An Australian League is the best of all. We Brits keep tryin but jus cant eva seem ta beat Oz ova a series. Me adores fitba', or if u prefer footie, futbol, football or wotever, an' is truly the worlds greatest sport (in me own humble opinion..it did breed Paulie baby...yum.. a nite wiv Paulie..mmmmmmm... sigh (oops soz Kate.. kiddin honest)), but if any team sport runs it close League is it, an its jus a pity that Union has the world stitched up wen it comes ta rugby havin the dosh an power that League lacks. League bein faster more skilful an the players r yummier 2. Only reason Union turned honest an went pro was ta stop league makin the inroads it was at the time inta its territory.

Lastly, its our preference the sport we likes, an the world is big enuff ta have them all. We take the pish outa each othas games, sumtimes only half in jest. But woteva ya game, enjoy it, luv it as me luvs me luverly jambos, support it an make sure it stays alive an vibrant.

always a quandry! i root for usa, but while they are dedicated players, as of yet we dont have the team strength, skills, and nor support, so we are soon out of the serious running. then i support mexico, spain, and portugal for the "...home teams...", my parents were split, with my mother for south africa, and my father england. so it all makes for split loyalties. a little more :yinyang: would be good!

Growing up American--I do like our style of "football" (one of those oxymoronic names since there are only a few times in American football where the foot is used to advance the ball) but I really do appreciate the shear athleticism that is displayed by players of "football" on the rest of the planet.

Most members of a football team (the world's term and not the provincial American term), go out there to play for 90 minutes--something I doubt that even the most in-shape American style football player is capable of.

My God, many times you see American-style football players will go in for one play and then they go back to the bench to put on an oxygen mask.

I cannot fathom that while there has to be multiples more kids (boys and girls) who play "soccer" over those who play "football" in our country; major league "soccer" struggles to find acceptance and financial results that even come close to those of other professional sports in our country.

You would think that "football" would be wildly popular here in the states.....perhaps one day it shall be....

I dunno who I want to win the final. On the one hand France have Henry, Pires and Wiltord and Italy have no Arsenal players. On the other hand France have Barthez, Makalele and Italy don't have any chav$ki or manure players. I think I'll just go for France, although Italy have for once been adventerous in this World Cup, the game against the Aussis showed they're still a bunch of diving prima donnas.
