I reckon the organizers and participants did bloody well do hold the contest in Johannesburg.... cos in africa, being gay can be a death sentence.....
people like the LGBT activists that risk their lives for the LGBT movement and community are people that I respect highly, as even people like me that walked in the civil union march in NZ, did not face the risks that the LGBT activists face in africa, and we stared down groups like stormfront and white power.....
when we talk about being out and proud.... we talk about discrimination in the work place and how it can effect us etc..... and here I read about the gay community walking right thru the middle of the firefight with their heads held high.......
and then I look around and ask myself... with all the talk about bi visibility and how nobody is acknowledging the existence of bisexuality ... where are the bisexuals, where is the Mr Bisexual world title contestant, where are the bisexual activists in johannesburg...??
once again the gay community has done it again. they have got themselves out there and got another foot in the door of equal rights for all... good on them, bless them... and may they be safe from harm, cos they are pushing further forward with the fight for LGBT acceptance, and I, for one, will continue to support the gay community for doing what they are doing..... cos damm I respect courage under fire......

"Last month, he told GayNZ.com that he was excited about the competition as he would meet new people standing up from the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) community.
"Sometimes gay life is still stereotyped and having such an amazing event showing role models will add to the acceptance of GLBT people," he said."
Uh? NO thank you sir. Please do not present yourself as a gay man and then state that you are meeting people at a gay male beauty pageant who stand up for bisexuals. Bisexual men are not generically gay. Be gay and proud..just don't say you are representing bisexual men.
Nice abs though.

the LGBT community is supporting the mr gay event in south africa cos it helps gain more visibility for the LGBT people of south africa, which is a extremely homophobic country. and hopefully mean a big step forward in the lgbt fight for rights..... and all you can do is tell him not to stand up for bisexuals......????
maybe you would like to learn a lil more about what happened in south africa and how the bisexual community reached out with support for the event as well as the gay community, cos it put the SA LGBT community more in the public eye and has started to bring attention to what is happening to the LGBT activists in SA.....before you rubbish somebody for being out, proud and visible as part of the LGBT community.... cos they are doing everything that they can to bring the LGBT into the public eye and gain more support for LGBT rights.....and then they have to deal with opposition within the LGBT community from people like you....
you wonder why the gay and lesbian community are not relying on the bisexual community for help and support ? you are a prime example of why.....

quote from the article.
1/ "standing up for gay and human rights".
The man is standing up for gay rights. There is no reference for bisexual rights but where do the bisexuals fall? Is it under "human rights" as darkeyes prefers? I suspect that is the rationale or the gay rights are also bisexual rights BS.
2/ "The Mr Gay competition took place over four days and included various challenges, including a photo, sports, fashion, swim suit, public speaking, and local outreach challenges."
Except for the inclusion of "sports" and possibly undefined "local outreach challenges", it seems like a gay beauty pageant.
If gay men want a gay man beauty contest that's fine. I didn't read about any bisexual men in this gay beauty pageant? It isn't called a GLBT men beauty pageant or the GLBT Men World. Its called a Mr Gay World competition. It isn't for bisexual men. There is no reference to transmen in the competition either.
I would suspect that if any hetero or bisexual man would enter a contest about it might be a body building contest but I've heard of the odd beauty contests for men...with no sexual orientation requirements. The "sexist man" contest is secretive (I think?) but it isn't labelled the "sexist heterosexual man" etc.
"maybe you would like to learn a lil more about what happened in south africa and how the bisexual community reached out with support for the event as well as the gay community, cos it put the SA LGBT community more in the public eye and has started to bring attention to what is happening to the LGBT activists in SA.....before you rubbish somebody for being out, proud and visible as part of the LGBT community.... cos they are doing everything that they can to bring the LGBT into the public eye and gain more support for LGBT rights.....and then they have to deal with opposition within the LGBT community from people like you....

Rule 2 (paraphrased) Talk about the issue and not flame the person ..thank you very much.
Please post the quote of this South African bisexual community that reached out or was it a global international bisexual organization that requested that there be a gay man beauty pageant?
Personally, I don't have a gay card nor am I a member of any GLBT organization. I am a member of a few bisexual websites.
I can understand the challenge of holding a gay beauty pageant in South Africa might seem. The government permitted these gay men contestants to enter the country to participate. Good for that government. I hope that it help show South Africa in a better light but time will tell if their laws and customs become more accepting of gay men. No reference to bisexuals though?

not gay people, but LGBT people...... he didn't make it about the gay community but the LGBT community.....cos its what he is standing up for ...
part of the prize is 25k of travel vouchers so the winner can travel around the world, as a representive of the LGBT community and as the winner of the mr gay world contest.......

http://www.mrgsa.co.za/ including this statement * At a quick glance, its rules distance it from a pageant – two of those are that there is no age limit and part of the marks is a written test on LGBTI history and general knowledge. *

btw on the mrgayworld link... they are willing to show that its not all about being gay..... as the lion may be hetero or bi.. we will never know... but hes not gay, I would say

It is still the Mr. Gay World contest. Such statements as you posted may be looked as the continuation of assuming that bisexual needs are being met by the GLBT organizations that sponsored this beauty pageant. They can not even hold a beauty contest for GBT men. How can they promote bisexuality rights and needs?
I doubt very much that he will promote anything about bisexuality. He might promote something about transexuality and tolerance. He might not.
On a personal note, this constant putting down bisexuals who do not think gay politically wears thin and shows biphobia.

how can they promote bisexual rights and needs, indeed ? well, look at drew.... he had a dream, he created it etc etc..... look at DJones, he had a dream, he created it... look at all of the bisexuals that did something about it....
for a start, they got up off their asses and did something about creating a platform for better visibility of the BI community.....then they got community and business support, then they got a lot of public interest, then they got people to say hey we want to be a part of it, then it came down to the BI community support......
a mrgay contest with a winner that is openly known in NZ for his support of the LGBT community as a whole, not just gay people... and all you can do is rubbish the contest, the winner, the LGBT people that supported it and the visibility that it can bring for the LGBT community in countries like SA...... and then try and portray people as biphobic......
LGBT support is what is needed... we have enuf naysayers outside of the LGBT community without the ones inside it, adding to the oppositions numbers

I suppose the ole adage any publicity is good publicity goes here.. whether it is of use or not to the cause of the lgbt will be argued about, but I suspect it will have very little impact on the plight of the lgbt in South Africa although it may well help raise awareness and give some kind of comfort to those of the lgbt who have been persecuted within the country.. but let's get it straight..
...the title of the thread is wrong for a start and misleading.. the Republic of South Africa is not a homophobic country.. that it has many homophobes within it is undoubted.. murders of gay, lesbian and bisexual people are frequent and there are those who would destroy the lgbt violently and without qualm.. but homosexuality, and thus bisexuality is perfectly legal within the Republic. South Africa after the fall of the Apartheid regime in the guise of the governing African National Congress led the world in passing laws which made discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation illegal and in 2006 made same sex marriage legal..the 5th country in the world so to do and the 1st in Africa.. there remains much homophobia in SA, but it is not a homophobic state. That government can and should do more the eliminate what prejudice exists is unquestioned, but at the same can't that be said of every country on the planet..including those which think of themselves as free societies with equal rights for all irrespective of orientation?

Darkeyes is correct South Africa is not a homophobic country and there are countries in Africa that actually are homophobic and a lot worse. South Africa is not one of them.

If that gay beauty contest was in any way representing LGBT people and Human rights etc, then it obviously didn't work for you.
After writing how fab those gays are, you launch into how shit bisexuals are, and how they don't deserve support from the gay and lesbian communities.
Make up your mind! Were they pro LGBT, or just pro gay?
Because if their were genuinely representing LGBT and their message was genuinely about accepting ALL sexualities and genders, it was sadly lost on you and maybe others too.
You make it sound like the Gay Reich! And maybe it is?:yikes2:

We find out that the OP is incorrect in his statements about South Africa government but he was typically vague about it being government or individuals that he blamed for oppression of GLBT in South Africa.
Let me repeat a question that I asked in post 4. He seems to have failed to answer this question and to give proof for his statements.
"Please post the quote of this South African bisexual community that reached out or was it a global international bisexual organization that requested that there be a gay man beauty pageant (in South Africa)?"
It seems to me and a few others that the OP continues to be very pre occupied with putting bisexual men down and twisting bisexuals to fit into his belief as to how we should behave by not only his morality but his perceptions such as supporting a gay beauty contest as being beneficial for bisexuals.
He does indeed seem to attempt to force bisexuals to conform to his gay reich. If he isn't putting bisexual men down, he seems to be putting gay men down in other blogs.
Good for djones for creating a bisexual social events in New York city! Let's remember that this was done without the GLBT organizations that the OP is promoting.

the winner is gay, he is pro LGBT, not just pro gay.... and now more visible than ever, so he is using his visibility to its fullest advantage for LGBT people, as he has stated....... but apparently thats not acceptable, hes not wanted to stand up for LGBT, only LGT.... so maybe somebody would like to mail him and tell him to be bigoted against the bisexual community as the bisexual community do not want to be represented by him as PART of the LGBT community
I never said that bisexuals are shit..... I asked where is the bisexual presence ( refering to the fact that they could have made themselves more visible using the event and their support, but they lack the bi visibility sites etc that the gay community do )..... where is the mr bisexual contest..... basically why are the bisexual community not doing the same types of things if they want to be more visible in the public eye.... cos its all good and well to tell the gay community to fuck off and stop standing up for the LGBT and do it only for the LGT... but the bisexual community will have to fill the gap.........
so its either a case of the bisexual community do not see the need to, do not want to.... or do not see the issue with the lack of bi visibility.... either way its up to the bisexual community to fix it..... or not......

Awesome story and Mr. Gay World is certainly very attractive. The links to the site with the stories and pictures regarding the other contestants was fascinating and yes, I admit it, I laughed at loud at the pic of the lions. The courage some of those men, especially the ones from Africa themselves, displayed by coming forward to participate amazes me.

YOU are telling US that the LGBT supporting gay is not enough! Maybe you should e-mail him and tell him how his efforts are wasted, because there's no bi, lesbian or trans section in the MR Gay World show?
Yes it's lovely that gays are spreading the LGBT word in Johannesburg, but I'm sure that's not a cue for some bloke in NZ high on gay pride to demand bi,lesbian and trans to 'get with the program'.
And thank God that you ARE just some bloke who doesn't speak for ANY community. The bi's there (yes there are bi's in Johannesburg) would feel worse for your gay supremacist involvement.

This guy who won the joke of a Mr. Gay world title is originally from Germany, and only moved to NZ a few years ago. So he's German. He's also your typical waxed Ken Doll clone that you see way too much of in gay porn. He's not that sexy, handsome, or hot just defined and a gym bunny. I see lots of younger men like him daily here in SF and they're high maintenance queens. These pageants and the queens who enter them are total jokes.

Oh, for goodness sakes.
LDD any beauty pageant called Mr Gay World has nothing to do with bisexual or transgendered men (unless he is gay & transman). It isn't Mr Gay World that is bigoted against the bisexuals. If you can not comprehend that a Mr Gay World is about being a gay man only, this is one of your behaviour traits that make you appear biphobic and a supporter of Bi Invisibility.
I was just reading a few quotes that I copied from the recent British Bisexual Report. We may want to begin to rethink our use of words if we are supportive of all GLBT. Show some respect for the various communities under this GLBT banner. It is not one community. At best it is an alliance of communities. There is no reason why bisexuals should accept an approach and thinking that it is one community where gays dominant and represent all.
"It is important to refer to LGBT communities (plural), rather than community (singular), because even within each category (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans) there are inevitably multiple overlapping communities and groups, rather than one explicit community" p17

He does have nice abs that I would guess that he has worked on a lot. That may make him a gym bunny but I don't watch that much gay porn. Do guys in gay porn all have such well developed abs? Mind you at 33 he has a few years left before he will really have to work on his abs to keep them..lol

Mr. Gay or the gay media, have missed the irony that this shaved from head-to-toe “man” is hardly the epitome of masculinity! He’s not my Mr. Anything. He’s both ignorant and full of internalized homophobia. What a shame. It makes him ugly. Masculine?!??! He should think twice before posing like Elle McPherson on an SI cover if he thinks he is the poster boy for masculinity! He doesn’t know the first thing about actually being masculine LOL he shaves and waxes his body hair! He’s a German queen living in NZ.
