I discovered tonight that the default setting for all new users was set to "No" for "Receive Email Notification of new Private Messages". It may have been that way for years. I had my own setting to "Yes" so I receive an email every time someone sends me a Private Message - I assumed that was the default and thus was the way most people had it.
For a variety of reasons I have changed the default to "Yes - Receive Email Notification of new Private Messages" tonight. The problem... it affects all users, not just new ones. So if you do not want this setting to be "Yes" you have to take a moment to turn it off. You do this by going to Control Panel (http://www.bisexual.com/forum/usercp.php) > General Settings (http://www.bisexual.com/forum/profile.php?do=editoptions) > and then look for:
"Email Notification of New Private Messages:
Receive Email Notification of new Private Messages
Don't receive Email Notification of new Private Messages"
And change that setting to the latter.

Sorry to have to change the default on all of you - it couldn't be helped. But it is just the default and like so many things on the site you can change the setting to your desires.
