I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend!!!! Get your summer clothes on and enjoy the warm sun soothing your skin as you're out at the BBQ grilling those mouth watering burgers, hot dogs, steaks or chicken. The sizzle of the grease splattering as the aroma's permeate the air. MMMMM! For those of you without sun....pull up a blanket in the livingroom and enjoy an indoor picnic with the one you love. For those of you who went to the beach, I hope you remembered your sunscreen! For those of you out of the USA, Happy Monday!

Happy Memorial Day everyone!

Here in Western New York we're recovering from the crushing defeat of the Sabres by the Carolina Hurricanes -- oh dear, will the South rise again? -- but the sun is out and the trees are rustling. I'll take the baby out for a walk, alone, since my wife is still recovering.

Love to all,
J

Yes, indeed, have a Happy Memorial Day for everyone!

Remember those in service and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in this sometimes necessary monstrosity called war. No matter what we think about war and conflict in general, it should not lessen the respect we have for our soldiers, gone, past and present.

We're having pork chops on the grill, potatoes and a veggie...maybe corn on the cob maybe...YUM! Just turned on the a/c, this spring has turned into summer lightning fast.

Thanks to all who have sent me a 'whats up' message. I don't mean to be a stranger but most of you know this is a trying time for me and that's all I can do...try.

luv and kisses to all,

Lest we not forget that this say commerates those who have given and are giving their lives. It is not about what we think of war but about those who sacrifice all. I salute all those who have served and are serving and I wish them safe passage home.

It is a good day to read again the words of Abraham Lincoln consecrating the battlefield at Gettysburg. I invite our neighbors and friends from other countries to read this. It will give you a little incite into a great man. I ask our friends and neighbors from other countries to post threads about great people of theirs. It is only thru understanding that we will not add more names to be commerated on this day.

Apologies for throwing a cold shower on all the warm "fuzzies" about Memorial Day.
To me, as a 22 year old military veteran, Memorial Day is not a "happy" event. As a veteran, I have not, nor will I ever visit war memorials and monuments in the memory of fallen soldiers for the following reasons:
To rehash and turn all misty eyed near such memorials on Memorial Day continues a cycle of war which to me is non ending. One should read George Orwell's "1984" in which a society is totally dependent on war for its very survival. This prophetic novel mimics what is going on right now, in the United States. Furthermore, Phillip Aggee (an Ex-CIA agent) wrote a few years back a book titled "In Search of Enemies." (I hope I wrote the author's name correctly). The premise of this book is that the United States must have an enemy to justify its existence, politically and economically. (Sounds like "1984", doesn't it?).
So Memorial Day, with all its pomp and ceremony touches the sentimental harp strings for those naive people who feel that their sons and daughters "should do the right thing and serve their country." Bull. What people need to do instead is invest in their sons and daughters education instead of living their "war memories" through their children.
However I know some who will not listen and promote the military as a place "to get experience, grow up and get the GI bill." To those I say this: your fossilized ideas will completely shatter when your son or daughter arrives in your home town in a flag drapped coffin. Then you will know. Then you will question the folly of war. But then, it will be too late.
Offer a prayer to the dead today for they were human beings (mostly misguided by others) who believed in what they did. Memorial Day is a very sad day for me, and I see no end to future memorials to the dead.

NakedAmb,

You bring up a lot of points and express them eloquently. I still enjoy Memorial Day, but I find enjoyment in it by tuning out the obvious propaganda. I try to commemorate not only noble soldiers who died in uniform, but also, all the important people in American history who struggled for justice against the the state oppression you're talking about

for Nat Turner

for Tom Paine

for Elizabeth Cady Stanton

for Sojourner Truth

for Henry David Thoreau

for Martin Delany

for Susan B Anthony

for Malcolm X

for Audre Lorde

for Andrea Dworkin

for the people who faced lynch mobs

for the people who protested the Vietnam War when nobody else would

for the young people in the streets, for the last few weeks, protesting...,

I honor those people too on Memorial Day, and it reminds me that you don't have to die fighting in a uniform, with a gun in your hand, under government approval, to be remembered. And it makes me feel better about it.

Happy Memorial Day, Naked Ambrosia.

Love,

We all remeber those who gave us or freedoms even though we still fight for them today they were the ones who gave us our courage to keep on fighting and to keep going so the dream of freedom for all never dies.

Hell ya I will be having a BBQ too I will not forget the beer:). have a good one all ;) .

Wolley, what makes you think you're free? If you really look deeply, you'll find out that it's an illusion. However, one must keep the illusion alive, don't we. And that means sending more troops to war.
