An Open Letter to SiriusXM OutQ Radio

PMB 193
13061 Rosedale Highway, Suite G
Bakersfield, California 93314
...
To:
Mr. Dave Gorab, Director of Talk Programming
Mr. Jeremy Coleman, Senior Vice President, Talk and Entertainment Programming
Sirius XM Radio Inc.
1221 Avenue of the Americas
New York, NY 10020-1001

5th July 2011

Mr. Gorab and Mr. Coleman:

How are you? I are fine. At least as close to fine as one is able to be after over a year of attempts to contact the two of you without any acknowledgment, let alone return of phone calls. Since May 2010 for Dave and the following month for Jeremy, as I recall. 212-584-5235 for Dave and 212-584-5100 for the SiriusXM general switchboard, right?

Anyway, as a subscriber to Sirius since 2003, a broadcaster of 40 years’ career span and a Bisexual man, it is particularly troubling to note that, since I began listening to SiriusXM OutQ, it identifies itself at the top of each hour as “America’s LGBT Radio Station” – but every single program host I’ve ever heard on the station has either been a gay man or lesbian. No Bisexual men or women, nor any Transsexual program hosts either. The closest to any that I can determine was one Bisexual woman who was a producer for Larry Flick’s program that Larry would occasionally converse with while the mic was open between records, and she left the program at least a year ago. Rather strange that Playboy Radio has employed more Bisexuals for its air staff than OutQ has ever hired, isn’t it? I’d imagine it’s kinda tricky to be “America’s LGBT Radio Station” without B or T representation on the air. Or should another adjective be used in place of “tricky”?

Additionally, although claiming to be “America’s LGBT Radio Station,” there are no OutQ programs that originate from outside New York City. Doria Biddle, a featured contributor to Frank DeCaro’s program, may be based in Los Angeles, but Frank, whose program it is, is in New York. In its first years, at least one of OutQ’s programs, “Harrison on the Edge,” originated entirely from Los Angeles. Other SiriusXM channels have programs originating from outside New York (Fred Imus from Arizona, Mojo Nixon from California, “The Grand Ole Opry” from Tennessee), and Playboy Radio originates its entire program schedule from Los Angeles. SiriusXM even has a permanent studio in Los Angeles that Doria Biddle has stated on OutQ is “badly underused” throughout most of the day.

To add to all this, while OutQ’s schedule of 2003 had live programming 24 hours each weekday, the current schedule is only 16 hours of live and 8 of repeats every weekday. One program, Larry Flick’s, is aired in a time frame where it reaches the West Coast when its potential audience is mostly asleep, 3:00 to 6:00 A.M. Pacific Time. The repeats begin at 7:00 P.M. Pacific Time, when there is still a substantial West Coast audience available.

Sorry, gentlemen, but this set of circumstances is just not acceptable on any of these counts. And it is necessary to begin rectifying immediately.

What I insist upon is:
(a) OutQ begin to air a weeknight program, from 7:00 to 10:00 P.M. Pacific Time, that I will be the primary host of, originating from SiriusXM’s Los Angeles studio.
(b) OutQ begin to air a weeknight program, from 10:00 P.M. to 1:00 A.M. Pacific Time, on which a Transgendered person will be the primary host, preferably (but not necessarily) originating from SiriusXM’s Los Angeles studio.
(c) OutQ will produce and air these programs for no less than eight years, the time frame that I personally know, from my own experience, that OutQ has thus far not had any Bisexual or Transgendered program hosts on a regular basis.

My resume is attached to the physical copies of this letter; as you are able to see, I have much more than enough experience to host such a program. In addition, it should be noted that I am physically disabled due to spinal disease (which has not affected my broadcasting skills); consequently, upon SiriusXM’s hiring me, it will qualify for a nice tax break. You’ll agree, that always comes in handy.

My email is baronofarizona@gmail.com, and my telephone number is 909-999-KING (5464). Either one is available for further discussion of this proposal.

I thank you for your time.

Most sincerely,

King Daevid MacKenzie

Who is "King" Daevid Mackenzie?

I looked up info on him and I did find his blog but I've never heard of him and if I did get SiriusXM I'm not sure if I'd listen to his program?

...D.C.: http://radio4all.net/index.php/series/Echoes+of+a+Century and http://radio4all.net/index.php/series/OUT+FRONT+LesBiGayTrans+Global+News are two of several series I've done over the years; I've also hosted issue-oriented talk programming on stations in the Chicago, Phoenix, Milwaukee, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Green Bay markets. OutQ is SiriusXM's talk station for BLGT listeners (but, contrary to SiriusXM's claims, completely devoid of bisexual or transsexual content); since you indicate you don't have Sirius or XM service, it's probably best compared in production style to, say, KGO. It is the only such radio service offered nationally...

Daevid thanks for the information.

On your shows when it comes to bisexuality and the topic of our sexuality what have you said or discussed?

Do you broadcast on internet radio at all?

...currently, KPYT Tucson airs a pre-recorded music program I created for them shortly before I moved to Bakersfield; mms://media.pascuayaqui-nsn.gov/Live is their online stream, and the program, "The Technicolour Dreamscape," airs at 11:00 P.M. Arizona Time on Friday nights. The only program that I've been on that specifically dealt with sexual orientation was "Out Front," the surviving programs of which I linked to upthread...

Daevid,

First of all, let me preface this by saying I am a SiriusXM subscriber, listener and a Stockholder. I listen to most of the programming on there, including OutQ. I don't listen to OutQ as often as I should, but I do listen(primarily Derek & Romaine).

If you are wanting to get a show on Sirius, what I would suggest doing is get with one of the shows' producers and tell them you want to be a guest on the show. Since you have hosted shows in the past-you can come up with a topic that would be something that everyone would have an opinion about, but you could use the bisexual angle to get more people to listen. Make sure you record the segment(s) and send the CD/MP3 along with your letter again to Sirius and let them take a listen. As you know, letters only go so far-but if you have that demo tape(and in this case, it would have been on one of their own shows), maybe they will take it a step further and give you a show.

At the very worst, make them an offer. And no, insisting that they put you on the air will just turn them off and they would not want to work with you. What I would suggest is that they give you the chance to prove yourself with one or two shows. And no, it doesn't have to be in the 7 o'clock time. Just tell them you want a chance to show you can bring in listeners. Since I don't know what they have for weekend shows, see if you can get a couple of hours during the day on a Saturday or Sunday. Tell them you want them to promote the show so that you have a chance to start with more than just one or two listeners in the beginning.

You can offer to them to do your show out of the Sirius LA studios-or they might do what the Howard Stern channels offer for the one show host that is a bit off his rocker(Riley Martin). They put an ISDN line in his apartment in New Jersey and they have a producer and I think an engineer come there once a week for him to do his show-and he is paid $400 for them to air his show. So there is a chance that if you can prove yourself to the management, you might be able to actually do your show from your house.

It's just a thought and I hope you are able to get your show on there.

...I have done exactly what you suggested several times in the past. The producers each told me specifically to approach Dave Gorab. When I informed them that Mr. Gorab has not acknowledged or returned any communication, they claimed to be surprised. I am taking the approach that I am because it appears that embarrassing Gorab and Coleman into action seems to be the only thing left. Whenever the next stockholders' meeting is held, perhaps you can ask why Gorab and Coleman act in this manner...

Then here's an even better suggestion. Send your letter to Mel Karmazin. He's the CEO of the company. Explain to him that you have been trying to at least receive a reply to your original mail and that you would like him to take a listen to your MP3/CD. And if he thinks you have what it takes to have a show on SiriusXM, ask him to forward the info to Gorab and Coleman.

Or, even try talking to Tim Sabean who is over the Howard Stern channels. They have some extra space on 101 that they might be able to slot you in for a test show or two on the weekends to start. You would be able to do the show out of LA and they can have a producer either in LA or New York handling the rest for you.

...okeh then, I'll try that. Considering Karmazin has even more on his plate to deal with than one would suspect Gorab and Coleman do, I don't know how far that'll fly, but I'll try it. If you could email me offsite and I can get some additional info from you -- after all, you already have a business relationship with the corporation -- let's take it that way...
