For me the secret would be your term "passable".
Personally, an obviously manly male, dressed in feminine attire is a turn-off for me. I accepted one male lover, who loved wearing panties, but it was an idiosyncrasy that didn't do anything for me. I just accepted it because he got a thrill out of it. I cared for him, and I'm sure I had quirks that he didn't care for, so we just allowed each other to be who were were.
I've only know one guy, who could pass for a female when he dressed up, but he refused to leave the apartment dressed as a girl. I was convinced that no one would think he was not a female. Both my GF and I were very attracted to him and tried to get him to go out with us, but that never happened.
I worked for the military for many years and have known more than one female soldier who could have passed for a male. That, too, is appealing to me.
Gender-bending can be an interesting and provocative thing to witness.

If the guy really looks like a woman it's hot to me, but if he is obviously a male dressed in womens cloths that does nothing for me. Now transexuals that look really pretty is a whole different story. I would love to pick up a transexual at a bar knowing that when I get her home I get a hot chick that just happens to have a cock I can suck and possibly be topped by.
